While 2024 may not have been a banner year for fashion, with the revolving door of creative directors leaving key positions vacant for months, Hollywood has continued to shine. Brands like Louis Vuitton have enlisted a host of chic celebrity ambassadors, Schiaparelli and Alaia have brought European flair to the streets, and Loewe’s ad campaigns feature a stunning array of acting talent, making it the label to wear.

Monse made a major impact when Michelle Obama wore its sleeveless suit to the Democratic National Convention in August, a standout moment styled by Meredith Koop. Method Dressing, following last year’s iconic Barbie-inspired red carpet looks by Margot Robbie and stylist Andrew Mukamal, is still trending — with mixed results. This year, Cynthia Erivo (in Marc Jacobs) championed a green movement, Maya Rudolph (in Patou) embraced boho chic for her Loot character, and Zendaya (in Stéphane Rolland) sported a tennis-inspired look for Challengers to varying degrees of success.

The men’s fashion scene, however, is finding its stride again. After a brief phase of over-the-top peacocking in 2023, a more suave, relaxed tone is emerging, led by stars like Paul Mescal (in Gucci), Jonathan Bailey (in Giorgio Armani), and Andrew Scott (in Etro). Colman Domingo (in Boss) impresses with his refined elegance, while Lenny Kravitz (in Saint Laurent) puts his own unique spin on the latest trends. Robert Downey Jr. (in Stella McCartney) also deserves credit for thanking his stylist, Erica Cloud, in his Oscar acceptance speech.

But enviable style is not just for the young. Veterans like Meryl Streep, in Valentino, Michelle Yeoh, in Bottega Veneta with fresh bangs, and Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, in sculptural Schiaparelli, quietly stole the show. At 64, Tilda Swinton (in Haider Ackermann for Jean Paul Gaultier Couture) looked as cool and modern as any newcomer.

The L.A. Academy Museum Gala continues to rise in prominence, offering a lesson in elegance over exhibitionism. Stars like Greta Lee (in floral Loewe), Anna Sawai (in poufed Louis Vuitton), and Zoe Saldaña (stunning in Harris Reed) turned heads without resorting to over-the-top theatrics.

Ultimately, 2024 has been a win for those who prioritized style and substance over flash, a timeless fashion rule that continues to resonate.
