Norway’s Royal Love Story: The Forbidden Romance That Changed A Nation

The royal love story of King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway will soon be depicted onscreen in a new drama on Prime Video. Titled Harald and Sonja, the series will focus on their “nine-year battle for their forbidden romance.” Set to be released on February 14, the drama will explore the couple's 60-year relationship, showcasing how their love "threatened the Norwegian monarchy."
King Harald, 87, and Queen Sonja, also 87, have been married since 1968 after meeting in 1959. Though their love was immediate, Harald’s father, King Olav, insisted that Harald marry a royal, not a "commoner" like Sonja, who was the daughter of a merchant. This led to a nine-year struggle for the couple to be together. Eventually, after much pressure, the couple wed in Oslo Cathedral in 1968, with King Olav walking Sonja down the aisle in a heartfelt gesture.
The series will highlight the societal challenges they faced and the power of their love. “Society took time to accept the new Crown Prince and Princess, but love won in the end,” producers said.
Despite being a commoner, Sonja captured Harald’s heart, and after years of separation and mounting pressure, the couple eventually received King Olav’s blessing. Harald even gave his father an ultimatum: he would either marry Sonja or remain single. Their marriage marked a new chapter for the Norwegian monarchy.
King Harald and Queen Sonja ascended to the throne in 1991, and they continue to reign despite their recent health challenges. The new drama Harald and Sonja will be available on Amazon Prime Norway on Valentine's Day.
